“So we will each receive one million for every week they are gone?” Adela repeated, as if money would make the situation easier for her.
“Yes madam that is correct.”the man in the lab coat said, he’d been holding out a pen for Adela to use for at least five minutes now while the uneasy mother stared at the official looking papers.
Seven days ago, Adela Alya had given birth to a baby girl in perfect health. And just yesterday she’d received a call from Ocir labratories, offering one million dollars a week, if they could have the new baby Selina, and their six year old Keri for experimentation. Adela hadn’t gotten the entire pitch, but something about making child-animal hybrids.
Adela slowly took the pen, which felt heavy in her hands despite how light it probably was.
“And they’ll have perfect conditions yes?” She asked slowly, looking at the paper again.
The man nodded hastily.
“More than perfect Mrs. Alya! And of course you’ll have visiting days! You must not forget this!¨
Yes, they’d seen the pictures of where the children would be staying. Swimming pools, tennis courts, queen size beds for each of the children, all they could ever need.
And then there was Adela and Lucas’s house. Ramshackle overall, ceiling was falling in, plumbing was older than Adela herself, they could hardly feed everyone.
Adela slowly signed her name, her hand shaking uncontrollably.
Adela Alya
Before Adela could react, the man yanked the paper from her grasp.
“You shall not regret it Mrs. Alya!” He said, scanning the page hungrily.
Lucas packed each girl, nothing much, clothing, teddy bears, general girl things.
“I hate you!” Keri screamed, clutching onto Selina with one hand, and her father’s leg with the other, who wasn’t even making an attempt to shake her off.
“I hate you! I hate you! I don’t wanna go I don’t!”
“Keri-” The scientist began weakly, reaching for Keri’s arm.
“NO!” Keri shouted. “You don’t touch me! I-I’ll-”
Selina began wailing in the midst of Keri’s shouting, filling the house with the distraught cries of innocent children.
“Keri.” Lucas said quietly, kneeling down next to his daughter.
For once, Keri quieted down, her eyes puffy from crying, trembling pathetically.
“Keri. This is for mommy and daddy. We don’t have enough money to take care of you now, where you’re going you’ll have lots of fun! It’s like summer camp! Do you remember summer camp?”
Keri nodded, staring up at her father with innocent eyes.
They’d gotten Keri, clutching Selina into the car, a fancy black car embelished with the Ocir insignia. A simple test tube filled with various words, signaling the relationship between literature and science. Around this time, Keri was too tired to resist anymore. She held selina close, staring out the tinted window.
Lucas held Adela close, standing outside their home.
“Thank you so much madam and sir.” The man said graciously. “We will see you soon.”
As the car rolled off down the road, stirring up dirt, Adela saw a tiny head pop up in the back window.
